Since word broke about our exclusive website edition of Roy Frumkes’ THE DEFINITIVE DOCUMENT OF THE DEAD, some of you have been asking us one specific question, which we thought we’d just address right here. The question is: “Why isn’t the longer version of THE DEFINITIVE DOCUMENT OF THE DEAD also in high-definition?” The answer is simple… Roy has been working on this film for 35 years. Some of the additional footage was not shot in hi-def. The footage from TWO EVIL EYES, for example, was shot in full-frame standard definition. Because of the various video formats used to create the final product (there is even a title card at the beginning, explaining the various sources used), Roy edited and finalized this new version only in standard definition. There is NO high-definition edit of his THE DEFINITIVE DOCUMENT OF THE DEAD.
Unlike some companies, Synapse Films is very concerned about the quality of their releases, so we chose not to do a “fake” upscale to fool our customers into thinking something is in HD. While doing research on this project, it was discovered Frumkes still retained the original 16mm negative for the 66 minute version he produced as a learning tool at New York’s The School of Visual Arts in 1978/79. When we found this out, we decided to do an HD transfer of the negative for our fans, so they could at least have a true high-definition version of the very first version of the film. This transfer is included as a Blu-ray in the limited website edition.
We want to take a moment to thank our fans for the already awesome response to this promotion. Since the word started to spread yesterday, we’ve already sold through a little over 10% of the total run… in the first 24 HOURS! We really appreciate our fans and want to thank you for your continued support.
